Newspaper Cutting - Reads: "Beastly Offspring of the British Lion" A "Kultured" German View. Herr Ganghofer, the German "poet,"who spends most of his time just now chronicling vapid nonsense about the Kaiser (who, of course, has bestowed an iron cross upon him) for publication in the German press, can on occassions write in quite a different sort of way. The sight of two British prisoners moved his Teuton soul within him, and caused him to hold forth on their iniquity in a passage of quite Swiftian bitterness:- "In the Lille hospital sat two Englishmen, the first English prisoners I had met. They sat aprt and indifferent in the two best seats near the warm stove. One was reading, probably one of England's cheap and nasty novels. The other was smoking and spitting. When my conductor spoke to them they were very ill tempered and unmannerly. It was not the pride of the enemy; it was just bad manners. Perhaps, however, I was not an unbiased judge for while i was observing the two beastly offspring of the British lion I felt on my shady side as if every tiniest hair I possessed from the back of my head downwards was bristling. This unpleasant sensation of instinctive aversion did not cease until I had turned my back on the sons of civilised "Albion". Reverse is a partial article on pineapple growing.
